Euro-Office was announced on March 27, 2026 as a coalition of European tech companies took the stage in Berlin with a bold goal: a truly sovereign, open source alternative to Microsoft Office. Built as a fork of OnlyOffice, it supports DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and ODF formats, and is designed to be paired with platforms like Nextcloud, Proton Docs, or Seafile as the document editing engine. As someone who has been vocal about my dislike of Nextcloud, I was skeptical at first. But after digging in — and actually getting it running with Seafile - I think this is a project worth paying attention to. In this video I cover what Euro-Office actually is, why the team forked OnlyOffice instead of collaborating with them, the ongoing licensing drama between OnlyOffice and the Euro-Office coalition, and where the project stands right now ahead of its planned summer 2026 stable release. 🔗 Links mentioned: Euro-Office GitHub: https://github.com/Euro-Office, Euro-Office Announcement: https://nextcloud.com/blog/press_releases/industry-initiative-launches-euro-office-as-true-sovereign-office-suite/, OnlyOffice's Statement: https://www.onlyoffice.com/blog/2026/03/onlyoffice-flags-license-violations-in-euro-office-project-by-nextcloud-and-ionos, The Register Coverage: https://www.theregister.com/2026/04/02/eurooffice_forks_onlyoffice/, Heise Online Coverage: https://www.heise.de/en/news/Euro-Office-OnlyOffice-accuses-of-license-violations-11241334.html, selfh.st Newsletter: https://selfh.st/weekly/2026-04-03/, My Seafile Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZNuVcx-Akk, Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro & Nextcloud thoughts 00:22 - How Euro-Office came to my attention 00:55 - What is Euro-Office 01:16 - The coalition behind it 01:31 - OnlyOffice explained 02:20 - Why fork instead of collaborate 03:01 - The Russian roots issue 03:40 - The OnlyOffice drama & license violations 04:05 - What Euro-Office actually is technically 04:31 - Testing it with Seafile 05:03 - Current state of the project 05:46 - Rough edges worth knowing about 06:01 - My final take 07:13 - Outro & community questions Subtitles by WinWhisper #EuroOffice #OnlyOffice #OpenSource #DigitalSovereignty #SelfHosted #Seafile #Nextcloud #LibreOffice #Docker #Homelab /=========================================/ ✅ Amazon Wishlist: https://dbte.ch/amznwishlist Get early, ad-free access to new content by becoming a channel member, or a Patron! ✅ https://www.patreon.com/dbtech ✅ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVy16RS5eEDh8anP8j94G2A/join All My Social Links: ✅ https://dbt3.ch/@dbtech Join Discord! ✅ https://discord.gg/M9J6hFq /=========================================/ ✨Ways to support DB Tech: ✅ https://www.patreon.com/dbtech ✅ https://www.paypal.me/DBTechReviews ✅ https://ko-fi.com/dbtech ✅ Cashapp: https://cash.app/$dbtechyt ✅ Venmo: https://venmo.com/dbtechyt ✨Come chat in Discord: ✅ https://dbte.ch/discord
