Copyparty: Sometimes You Just Need A Small Simple File Server

Not every file sharing situation calls for Nextcloud or ownCloud. Sometimes you just need something quick, lightweight, and easy to get running. That is where Copyparty comes in. Copyparty is an open source file server written entirely in Python. It supports WebDAV, SFTP, FTP, TFTP, and ZeroConf, and comes with a built-in web interface featuring a media player, thumbnail generation, and file sharing. It runs on just about anything and can be up in minutes. In this video I walk through the Copyparty interface, explain what it can do, and then show how easy it is to get running in Docker using just two files: a Docker Compose file and a copyparty.conf configuration file. Fair warning up front: the interface aesthetic is rough around the edges. The developer clearly prioritized features over polish. But if you need a capable little file server for local network use without standing up something heavy, Copyparty is worth a serious look. If you want to go deeper, I put together a members-only video showing how to build a portable file server using a Raspberry Pi 5 as both the server and a wireless access point.
